The Petition ...

Petition to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta

Petition request:

We, the undersigned residents of Alberta, petition the Legislative Assembly to take action regarding the proposed transition of Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) recipients into the Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP). We are concerned that the ADAP program would reduce essential supports for Albertans with disabilities and request that the Legislative Assembly halt the transition, cancel ADAP, maintain AISH supports, and ensure a fair appeals process.

We are concerned that the ADAP program would reduce essential supports for Albertans with disabilities in the following ways:

1.       Loss of income: Transitioning from AISH to ADAP reduces monthly benefits by $200/month. At Alberta’s current minimum wage ($15/hour), recipients would need to work approximately 13 extra hours per month just to replace what was lost. This would increase financial hardship, particularly for those unable to work consistently.

2.       Reduced earning exemptions: Under AISH, recipients could earn up to $1,072/month before clawbacks; ADAP reduces this to $350/month, limiting financial independence and discouraging part-time employment.

3.       Forced reapplication for AISH benefits: All AISH recipients would need to reapply, despite already undergoing extensive medical evaluations by licensed professionals. For many, this process took years and significant personal cost. Repeating it is unnecessary and could create delays in benefit access.

4.       No appeals process: Removing appeals for disability benefits leaves applicants without recourse if benefits are wrongly denied.

5.       Clawback of federal Canadian Disability Benefit: ADAP would claw back the $200/month federal benefit dollar-for-dollar, preventing disabled Albertans from receiving additional support.

Reducing supports in these ways is counterproductive, as it increases administrative workload, limits financial independence, and creates barriers for Albertans who rely on AISH benefits.

We respectfully request that the Legislative Assembly of Alberta:

1.       Halt the transition from AISH to ADAP.

2.       Cancel the proposed ADAP program.

3.       Maintain existing AISH benefit levels and earning exemptions.

4.       Ensure that all applicants for disability assistance have access to a fair appeals process.

(All signatories must be Alberta residents. Original signatures only; no photocopies, stamps, or digital signatures.)

There is also an Online Petition

In addition to the official paper petition, there is also an online petition. While it is not officially recognized by the Alberta Legislature, it helps amplify the message and spread awareness online.

Signing both is the most effective way to support this effort — the paper petition gives real force in the Legislature, while the online petition amplifies the message across Alberta.
